ALBANY BREAD COMPETITION
A big thank you to all parents that buy Albany bread and went to the trouble of cutting out the bar codes on the packets and sending them to school. For your efforts our school received R1000 for being one of the first 200 schools to send in 5 000 bar codes. Also in the local Pietermaritzburg Albany draw we came 3rd and won R3 000.

BOOKS 2 YOU
To promote reading and literacy in our school, Books 2 You will be hosting a Book Fair at our school on Tuesday 30 August from 7:30am – 10:00am and Wednesday 31 August from 10:00am-3:30am. You are invited to visit the fair to purchase books for your children and/or to donate to the library. Should you donate a book to our library, your child’s name will be put in the front of the book and she will be the first to take the book out of the library once it has been processed. Each class will be allocated a time to browse the books at the fair. If you are unable to pop into the fair yourself, you may send money in an envelope so that your child can purchase a book. The average price of a book is R35-00. In appreciation for hosting the book fair, BOOKS 2 YOU gives us a BUY BACK BONUS – that is, we receive a percentage of the total sales back in book. This is a wonderful way to add new titles to our library at no extra cost! We look forward to seeing you at the book fair. Your support is greatly appreciated.

SPRING DAY
On Thursday 1 September we will be celebrating Spring. We request that all children come to school wearing civvies and bring R2 for a Spring Competition. During the morning we will hold a Spring HAT Competition for Grade RR to Grade 5. Grade 6 and 7 girls will decorate their HAIR for a Spring competition (nothing permanent please). Each class will be awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Please ensure that your child brings her hat/hair accessories to school to avoid deliveries to the school.

CASUAL DAY
On Friday 2 September people in the work place and at schools will especially remember those people that have disabilities: like the blind, the deaf, the crippled etc. Any children and staff who want to support this cause by buying a R10 Casual Day Sticker (from ABSA bank, Pick ’n Pay, Spar, Game etc..) may come to school dressed “casually” and wearing their sticker on Friday 2 September. The R10 for the sticker goes directly to NCPPDSA who are responsible for Casual Day. For more information click on www.casualday.co.za. Children may also order Casual Day Stickers from Miss Meyer. They must give Miss Meyer the R10 by Thursday as she will buy the stickers on Thursday afternoon so they can wear them on Friday. Buying a Casual Day sticker is not compulsory, but only those who have a R10 casual day sticker may wear casual clothes on Friday.

TOILET ROLLS
Please can the Grade RR girls bring a pack of 9 or 10 toilet rolls (Twin Saver or similar) to school.

SCORE-A-CAR 3 COMPETITION
There are still a few books that haven’t been returned to school. Please make every effort to return them as soon as possible as St Martin’s is making arrangements to collect all our raffle books.

SPRING WALK
Our spring walk will be taking place on Saturday 17 September. Registration is from 8:00 for buying a ticket to walk, alternatively you can send the money to school and tickets will be sent home with your daughter. The walk starts at 8:30am. The cost of the tickets for walking is R15. Please set aside this morning as we would love all our girls and their families as well as past pupils and LGS friends, to come and join in the fun and celebrate spring. Parents, if you wish to have a stall please contact Mrs Lochner – the school will be providing food so no other food stall will be allowed. After the walk, refreshments will be sold. There will also be lots of fun and games for the children such as a jumping castle, cup cake decorating, and a "surprise sack" stall. The ladies in charge of the "surprise sack" are requiring everyone’s help in donating small items that will fit inside small brown paper packets. All girls that bring something for the "surprise sack" packets may, as a reward, wear civvies to school this Friday(26th August).

E-MAIL ADDRESSES
Mrs. Banger is wanting to start a data base with e-mail addresses for school correspondence only. Please would you send your e-mail address to Mrs. Banger at bursar@longmarketschool.co.za. If there are any changes in your contact details please would you let the office know either by e-mail or via your daughter’s homework book.

AFTER SCHOOL EXIT
Parents, as from tomorrow, for security reasons all our girls will be collected after school from the car park. Even girls that walk home will use the gate at the car park. We also request that parents of Grade 1 to 3 girls kindly refrain from walking their daughters to their classrooms. Please also don’t go and collect your daughters after school from their classrooms unless you have made an appointment with her teacher. If you have any need to see anyone or have a problem please report to the secretaries in the office.

SPELLING BEE
Miss Meyer is going to run a spelling bee with our Grade 2 – 7 girls. A letter will be sent home with all the relevant information. Please support this worthwhile competition.

A WISE SAYING
"A champion is someone who does not settle for that day’s practice, that day’s competition, that day’s performance. They are always striving to be better. They don’t live in the past."
- Michael Jordan
